Have you ever seen someone glow? Close your eyes and imagine 200 people glowing in the same rhythm, to the same beat, moving through the same steps. It’s on our faces, in our bodies as we move together, with Swallowtail’s songs rushing through our bodies and filling up our hearts. Reeling, disoriented, spinning wildly from one set of strong arms to another. Feeling him catch me, twirl me, lift me, send me into free space whirling on one foot and held up by shear force of will until I’m caught again by the next and here I can feel the power and strength of his arms, nothing held back, bodies moving through the dance, minds dazzled, feet still going. The caller fell away at some point...we never noticed and someone lets out their breath in an exuberant whoop, spurring the band to greater heights and we cheer together, feet never stopping, world still spinning, lean into it or your feet will lift off the floor as you turn. Hugging and laughing, bodies pressed together, your sweat to his sweat and you’ve never met him before but here it’s only natural because you’re all part of the same creature spiraling upward, dizzy, lost together.

Swallowtail played at Glen Echo last night for the contra. They’re...indescribably wonderful.
