I’m cleaning out the cube at work. Here’s my pile of "word of the whenevers". They’re all pretty obscure, and all but the first one are useful. Libraries have such lovely dictionaries. Yes, I get excited when I run into new words.


Faience (n): glazed earthenware or pottery, especially a fine variety with highly colored designs. Pronunciation: fI’ ahnss

Apophasis (n): denial of one’s intention to speak of a subject that is at the same time named or insinuated.
Nifty. There’s a word for everything.

Festinate (v, adj): 1)to hurry; hasten 2)hurried.

Cognomen (n): 1)a surname 2)any name, especially a nickname.

Crepuscular (adj): 1)of, pertaining to, or resembling twilight; dim; indistinct 2)appearing or active in the twilight, as certain bats and insects.

Insouciant (adj): free from concern, worry, or anxiety; carefree; nonchalant. Pronunciation: in soo’ see ahnt

Deliquesce (v): 1)to become liquid by absorbing moisture from the air, as certain salts 2)to melt away 3)(Bot.)to form many small divisions or branches.
